How Do Neuromodulators Work?

A neuromodulator creates an alteration of nerve activity within the body via the targeted delivery of a stimulus (e.g., a chemical). When a neuromodulator – in this case, Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® – is injected into a targeted area (e.g., beneath the skin’s surface around the eyes, where fine lines are being targeted), it binds to receptors in the muscle, acting as a messenger by sending a signal that blocks the release of acetylcholine (a major neurotransmitter that, amongst other things, contracts smooth muscles and dilates blood vessels). By blocking the actions of acetylcholine, the appearance of wrinkles can remain diminished for up to 3-4 months. 

We often use Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®, depending on which works best for the individual patient, and we sometimes combine them with fillers like Juvederm, given the complementary nature of the two.

Which One Is Right For Me?

A great question to ask is what determines which of the three are right for you. Let’s take a look at these three effective & highly popular neuromodulators to find out more.


Botox® is a product that consists principally of botulinum toxin A, which is a compound that is produced from bacteria (Clostridium botulinum). When injected into the skin,  it binds to receptors in the muscle, helping to diminish the appearance of wrinkles. Botox® is often used when the site of injection needs to be highly targeted, e.g., a small area of the face where a deep frown line is being targeted. Botox® was the first and is still the most widely-recognized wrinkle relaxant product.  


Xeomin® also centers on the use of botulinum toxin A, but it differs from Botox® in that it does not contain any additives. Because of the purity of the structure of the product, we find that some patients are subsequently less likely to become resistant to it, preventing antibody resistance. This offers a valid alternative to Botox® in patients who have enjoyed success with Botox® and Dysport® but who have also noticed a reduction in the effects of each with repeated injections over time.


Dysport® tends to work a little quicker than Botox® and is also generally able to spread to a wider area when injected. Depending on your requirements, how quickly you would like to see results, & the localized area that is being injected, this might make Dysport® a better choice than Xeomin® or Botox®. Dysport® is often a great choice when a larger area is being targeted.
