Bladder Instillation

If you suffer from Interstitial Cystitis (IC), you’ll know how much pain, discomfort & inconvenience it can cause. It can affect personal relationships, impact your social life, prevent a fulfilling sex life, cause anxiety & stress & even affect your performance at work. While there are existing treatments for IC (also referred to as Chronic Pelvic Pain), they don’t work for everybody. When you need to take the extra step to reclaim your love & enjoyment of life & fight back hard against IC, a Bladder Installation might offer the rapid relief that you need.

What is a Bladder Installation?

A bladder instillation, sometimes called a bladder wash, is a procedure that we can perform in-office at the Doctors Studio. We use a urinary catheter which allows us to inject a tailored mix of medication directly into the bladder. Patients often report a significant decrease in pain and inflammation following the treatment.

Is It Backed by Science?

Yes! According to recent research conducted in 2020, Bladder Instillation (also referred to in medical literature as Intravesical Treatment) is effective because:

the use of drugs with anti-inflammatory properties, able to desensitise hypersensitive nerves, as well as restoring the permeability of damaged urothelial cells, may be a sensible approach to all kinds of LUTS [lower urinary tract symptoms] secondary to bladder inflammation, and not just bladder pain.

We ensure that the exact utilization of medication reflects your unique needs, which may include one or more of the following: intra-vesical lidocaine, hyaluronic acid, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) heparin, or chondroitin sulfate (either prescribed as individual or combined, therapies). It is critical in dispensing Bladder Installation therapies that the exact dosage and solution be matched to the patient, alongside the optimal time for the medication to remain in the bladder of the patient, in order that optimized results occur. As medical experts here at the Doctors Studio, we are practiced at recognizing the exacting needs of each individual patient. Rest assured that you are in safe hands!

What Can I Expect?

Before the urinary catheter is inserted, you will be asked to empty your bladder, and we will then use the catheter, inserted through the urethra into the bladder, to drain any remaining urine. The medication is then inserted directly into the bladder, and the patient is encouraged to try to hold the medication in their bladder for at least 30 minutes (to a maximum of 2 hours) so that the bladder is directly exposed to the medication. We may ask you to shift position from time to time so that the entire bladder wall & area is targeted.

The number of bladder instillation treatments that you will receive is based on your unique medical history & the severity and nature of your IC, so we will of course explain this information to you during your consultation. Following the treatment, we encourage patients to drink lots of water to flush out the bladder effectively.
