Our Top Tips for Great Skin

Here’s a fact that not many people know. The largest organ in the human body is…

…the skin!

Most people also do not know that 60% of whatever we choose to use on our skin is absorbed into our bodies! That means we need to be extra mindful of the ingredients contained in the skin care products that we choose. After all, we expose our skin extremely frequently (sometimes even twice daily) to these products. That means we need to make really informed choices when it comes to making the best possible choices at the beauty aisle.

That’s easier said than done, however. The chemicals and ingredients listed on skin care products can be pretty confusing! And, let’s be honest, not many of us really understand exactly what the complex-sounding chemical ingredients listed on the back of our favorite skin products actually are.

That’s exactly why our Studio Team has put their heads together – to come up with their top 5 tips for choosing the safest & most effective skin care products out there!

Our Top Five Takeaways

Before we begin, remember that all skin care should be completely fragrance, paraben, and solvent-free – as a minimum.

Here’s our go-to list of what else to look out for – and avoid.

1. We’re all different and your skincare should be, too.

Our first tip? Remember that we are all unique when it comes to our skin. Avoid lanolin, mineral oil, waxes, or shea butter, as they can clog pores, particularly if you have greasy skin, or if you are prone to breakouts. You should also avoid alpha-hydroxy acids, glycolic acid, retinoic acid, and salicylic acid if you have particularly dry or sensitive skin (although they can suit other skin types).

And if you’re pregnant? There are two things we need to tell you. The first is (obviously) congratulations! The second? Avoid skin care products that contains a bunch of ingredients that you might have enjoyed using before pregnancy. That might even mean switching from your favorite brands for a while, until your baby arrives. For example, while vitamin A derivatives such as retinol and retinyl palmitate, essential oils, salicylic acids, and hydroquinone can all offer fantastic benefits for the skin, they can also cause birth complications, so need to be completely avoided during pregnancy.

What to Avoid....And Why?!

2. Avoid DEA, MEA, and TEA

  • Diethanolamine
  • Monoethanolamine
  • Triethanolamine

You’ll likely find these products contained in cleansers, soap-based products, and clear, liquid-based beauty products. When they penetrate the skin, they can contribute to the development of cancer-causing substances so should be completely avoided.

3. Steer clear of parabens

Propyl, butyl, ethyl and methyl are all parabens that are often simply labeled as preservatives and can contribute to hormone imbalance. They are extremely common elements in skincare products, including moisturizers but they can play havoc with your endocrine system.

4. ‘Herbal extracts’ aren’t always as pure as they claim to be!

Many skincare products base their identities around being a ‘herbal extract’, which sounds natural – and natural means pure and healthy, right? Not always!

Many products made from herbal extracts contain ingredients that include gaseous hydrocarbons known as propylene glycol and butylene glycol. Both act as a surfactant (that means it stabilizes the interaction of oil & water so that products ‘sit’ better on your skin).

They can, however, strip your skin of its natural moisture, leaving it looking dull and tired, and hasten the aging process, so should always be swerved.

5. Save your Hormones!

Did you know that some skin care ingredients can play havoc with your hormones? Well-known EDC’s, or Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, including parabens, bisphenols, phthalates, and benzophenones, can really disrupt a range of endocrinological processes within the body. The result? A potential avalanche of health issues. You’ll often find various EDC’s in skin care ingredients because they can contribute to smooth and supple skin – but the price you’ll pay in unbalanced hormones just isn’t worth it!

So what should be in my moisturizer?

A great skin care product should rely on organic, natural ingredients. Our favorites include velvet antler extract, ginger root extract, and niacinamide (Vitamin B). You should also look for barrier enhancing lipids. That’s because they that act to mobilize the skin’s natural defenses and resources to combat the effects of the sun and pollutants in the air. Seek out great anti-inflammatories, too, such as Green Tea Extract. And choose products that include ‘non-comedogenic’ on the label (this means that they does not clog pores).

Lastly, your favored skin care products should be created by a company that you can trust! That will offer you the assurances that you need that ingredients have been sourced ethically, are of the highest possible quality.
