Did you know that your risk of ED shoots up if you suffer from diabetes?

30 million Americans currently suffer from diabetes, with 90% (27 million) classified as sufferers of Type II diabetes. Type II diabetes is a form of diabetes often referred to as a ‘lifestyle disease’ where acquired insulin resistance leads to critically high circulating glucose levels that can lead to serious inflammation & physiological damage. What many people do not know, however, is that diabetes can lead to a seriously increased risk of ED, & that ED can provide a significant indicator of Type II diabetes.

Read on to find out why ED & diabetes are so closely inter-related – and how the Doctors Studio can help treat both, restoring your health & setting you on the path, once again, to optimized emotional health, sexual performance & wellness.

What Exactly is Diabetes?

Diabetes is not a single condition or disease, but a group of metabolic diseases that are characterized by increased levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. You may already know that when your blood sugar drops quickly (for example after a large, sugary treat, like a big donut), you can sometimes feel dizzy or lethargic. This is because your body needs time to allow the pancreas to release a hormone called insulin, which allows glucose to enter our cells as glycogen. From there, our bodies use that glycogen for energy.

If you suffer from Type II diabetes, your pancreas is either unable to make enough insulin or the insulin your pancreas makes can’t work properly, meaning that glucose cannot enter your cells & be converted to glycogen to power our day-to-day activities. This is one major reason why fatigue, or lack of energy, is a common symptom of diabetes. As glucose cannot enter our cells, it remains in our blood, leading to excessively high blood sugar levels that just keep on rising. Your pancreas responds by releasing more & more insulin to try to counteract rising blood glucose levels.

Chronic overproduction of insulin can cause the pancreas to ‘tire out’, leading to the production of less and less insulin, placing a patient at risk of short-term inflammation, hyperglycemia & endothelial toxicity, & longer-term complications such as neuropathy (damage to the nerves), heart attack, stroke, foot problems, nephropathy (kidney problems), sexual dysfunction & gum disease.

Whilst genetic factors often contribute to the onset of the disease (e.g., a family history of diabetes), often Diabetes Type II manifests due to lifestyle choices; a high fat & sugar intake, for example, hypertension (caused by high stress, smoking, high alcohol intake or a sedentary lifestyle), low levels of HDL cholesterol, obesity & lack of exercise. Type II diabetics can live with the disease for years without being aware that they have it, but might begin to experience symptoms, such as ED, where neurological and circulatory damage caused by diabetes disrupts blood flow to the areas of the body that need it most (in the case of ED, to the penis, inhibiting erections).

The ED/Diabetes Connection

Funny superheroes

ED is considered a potential indicator of Type II diabetes in men under 45 years of age. Studies show, in fact, that men with Type II diabetes typically experience age-related ED 10-15 years earlier than non-diabetics. Worse still, by the of 70, an overwhelming 95% of men with Type II diabetes can expect to experience ED. In fact, men who suffer from diabetes are up to three times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Whilst 50% of men will experience some form of ED in their lifetime, this statistic jumps to 75% amongst diabetic males. If you’re feeling less superhero, and more super tired, diabetes might be the cause.

Whilst ED can be caused by a myriad of factors, age plays a major factor, often caused by hormonal changes associated with andropause (the ‘male menopause’) &/or falling testosterone levels. Diabetes appears to skew the impact of age-related ED significantly. Stunningly, around half of all men with Type II diabetes will develop ED within 5-10 years of their initial diagnosis, with the risk of impotence significantly raised if they also suffer from heart disease. The nerve & circulatory damage sustained by diabetes not only causes ED, but also places men at far greater risk of a range of comorbid conditions such as obesity, heart disease, or high blood pressure, all of which also can detrimentally affect sexual performance & function.
