What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are cosmetic injections that are used to smooth wrinkles, soften fine lines, improve facial contours, and plump up your skin. The primary goal in most cases is to renew your skin’s appearance and restore it back to a youthful glow.  Since dermal fillers are minimally invasive and non-surgical, they generally only take about 30-60 minutes to complete. A trained physician, nurse, or physician assistant will administer your injections right there in the doctor’s office. This elective procedure requires minimal downtime, and recovery is generally quick and easy. Patients love that the results are instantaneous, and they usually last for months or even years, depending on the type and location of the injections.  There are many different types of dermal fillers on the market, and your physician will help you choose which option is right for you.

Why Are Dermal Fillers Used?

Collagen is a protein in your body that contributes to the elasticity of your skin. As we age, we naturally lose collagen, which is responsible for maintaining a plump, youthful appearance. Over time, the skin begins to lose its volume and, as a result, often becomes loose, thin, and saggy.  Dermal fillers help to reverse the aging process by restoring volume to loose skin, evening out facial features, renewing plumpness in the cheeks and lips, and smoothing out fine lines, wrinkles, and creases in the face.

Before Dermal Fillers

Before you get your dermal fillers, you’ll have a consultation with the healthcare provider who will be administering your injections. They will do an initial examination of your face and discuss your concerns, goals, and the different options available to you. In some cases, your doctor may use a marker or pen to mark the areas of your face that will serve as the site of the injections, and they may photograph your face during this process for reference. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate fillers for you and will discuss the recovery time and any potential side effects associated with the procedure. Additionally, your healthcare provider will review your medical history, ask about any medications you’re currently taking, and other important information to prevent potential complications after getting your fillers. They will likely ask if you have:
  • A history of bruising or bleeding during similar treatments
  • Allergies
  • Skin conditions
  • Neurological issues
The initial consultation is your opportunity to speak to your doctor about any concerns you have, ask questions about the procedure, and make sure you have all of the information you need to make well-informed decisions.

What to Expect During the Dermal Filler Procedure

Dermal fillers are a quick, easy, and often painless procedure that is performed right in your healthcare provider’s office or in a medical spa.  The doctor administering the injections will first clean your skin and may apply a topical anesthetic to dull the pinch of the injection. The injection is often painless, but some patients find the sensation to be a bit uncomfortable and prefer to use the anesthetic. Your doctor will then use a thin needle to administer a small amount of filler under the skin. They may repeat this process a few times in different areas until the desired result is achieved.

After Dermal Fillers

Once your treatment is complete, your doctor will clean your skin again and may offer an ice pack to prevent or reduce swelling. You may experience minor bruising or discomfort after your treatment, but these side effects are usually mild and will dissipate after a few days. The results of the procedure are usually noticeable immediately, but the results sometimes vary depending on each patient’s circumstances. Watching your appearance change is a challenging part of the aging process. Dermal fillers are a quick, easy, often painless way to restore your youthful appearance, build your confidence, and reverse the signs of aging.  Schedule a consultation at Doctors Studio today to find out which dermal fillers are right for you!
