Feeling way too hot & bothered? Don’t Sweat It!

man driving car

Stuck on the freeway in a traffic jam in thirty-degree heat is no fun. The windows are rolled down as you try to enjoy just a little respite from the powerful rays of the sun that won’t stop beating down on you. Sweat pours down your brow and the back of your shirt. You’re hot, sticky, & fed up and you can’t stop dreaming of the long, cold shower you’re going to step into the moment you get home.

We’ve all been there, and it’s no fun. But we know that sweat is just our body doing what it needs to do to protect us.

When Sweat Helps Us…And When It Doesn’t

While inconvenient, sweating performs a vital function for our body, preventing our organs from overheating & making us unwell. But for some people who suffer excessive sweating, that sticky, uncomfortable feeling becomes a frequent, uncontrollable, & miserable problem that can genuinely lower quality of life.

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a permanent problem for some of us, leaving us frequently embarrassed, uncomfortable & miserable. It usually affects the palms of the hands, feet, armpits, and groin.

Why Do We Sweat?

There is nothing more incredible than a tall, cold glass of crystal clear water on a hot day. Drinking water helps us, and sweat does too. In fact, we couldn’t live without either. Sweating is crucial to the functioning of our body, enabling us to regulate our body temperature & prevent us from dangerously overheating. When we sweat, the SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System) activates our sweat glands using a chemical messenger called acetylcholine. This begins a process whereby water evaporates from the skin, cooling us down.

However, for some people, a heightened sensitivity to this acetylcholine signal causes far more sweat than their body needs to produce for body temperature regulation.

Generalized & Secondary Hyperhidrosis

Generalized hyperhidrosis affects the entire body, usually as a result of abnormalities in the number or distribution of sweat glands, a defect in blood vessels, or particular sensitivity to the body’s acetylcholine signal.

Secondary hyperhidrosis usually occurs following the onset of another medical condition such as the endocrinological shifts caused by the menopause or andropause, autonomic nerve system disorders, neurological disorders, spinal cord injury and infectious disorders. For example, almost 80% of perimenopausal women and 65% of postmenopausal women are believed to experience vasomotor symptoms, as a result of the hormonal changes taking place within their body, leading to excessive sweating, hot flushes and night sweats.

Testing for Hyperhidrosis

At the Doctors Studio, we test for generalized hyperhidrosis, as well as any possible causes of secondary hyperhidrosis, such as thyroid issues, anxiety, infection, the use of specific medications for existing conditions that might trigger excessive sweating, prediabetes or diabetes, or hormonal imbalances.

Treating Excess Sweating

Let Us Help You!

Excess sweating can feel really embarrassing & humiliating, especially when sweat (which is virtually odorless) mixes with bacteria. It is virtually impossible to avoid that mix if you need to wear a suit, shoes or socks in a hot office all day, every day, if you’re stuck on crowded public transport in summer, or if you are hanging out in the evening in a packed bar or nightclub. The only solution might feel like cancelling every social engagement that you can & trying to avoid colleagues in the office wherever you can, perpetually dreading anybody coming too close.

But there’s a far better solution. We can help you stop the excessive sweating rapidly, safely & effectively & help you restore your confidence. So if you feel that you, or someone you know, might benefit from treatment for excessive sweating/hyperhidrosis, contact the Doctors Studio today!
