Don’t Let Constipation

Ruin Your Day

Dont Panic written on Toilet Paper

Constipation can be a pain in the butt - literally! And if you suffer from it intermittently or more regularly, you’re not alone. Over 4 million people in the United States suffer frequently from constipation (around 2% of the population), making it the most common digestive complaint in the country! As a result up to 3 million Americans a year are prescribed stool softeners and laxatives, with 92, 000 hospitalizations reported where constipation was included in the discharge notes. It occurs three times more commonly in women than in men, and can cause a wide range of uncomfortable side effects such as indigestion, bloating & flatulence.

What is Constipation?

Constipation is a state where you are experiencing less than three poops, or bowel movements, a week.  It is usually characterized by hard, lumpy stools, the need to strain when you defecate, the feeling of a blockage in your rectum, feeling as if you can’t completely empty the rectum when you do defecate, and sometimes, the highly unpleasant requirement to use your fingers to remove the stool from your rectum manually. You’ll know if you’ve ever suffered from it that it can cause a whole range of uncomfortable and often painful symptoms such as embarrassing flatulence (gas), bloating and nausea (due to the increase in bacteria in the colon caused by stools remaining in the colon too long).

What Causes Constipation?

Constipation occurs when waste moves too slowly through your digestive tract, &/or cannot be adequately and efficiently removed from the rectum, causing the stool to become hard and very difficult to pass. Constipation can be a symptom of inflammation, dysfunction & disease and, if left unchecked, can cause serious long-term damage. Possible causes of short or longer-term constipation can include:

  • The hormonal shifts that accompany menopause
  • Short-term constipation around menstruation
  • Pregnancy
  • Blockages in the colon or rectum
  • Anal fissures
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Abdominal, rectal or colon cancer
  • Colon stricture (narrowing of the colon)
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • Food allergies & intolerances
  • Nutrient deficiencies (e.g., a B-12 deficiency)
  • Nerve damage
  • Under or overactive thyroid
  • Diabetes
  • Specific medication use

The point is, you need to end constipation as quickly as possible and to do so, we need to find out exactly what lies at the root of yours.

Won’t It Just Go Away on its Own?

Some women experience constipation after childbirth, which might be partially caused by weakened pelvic muscles, or dyssynergia (a lack of coordination of the relx and contract movements of the pelvic muscles), or anismus (the inability to relax pelvic muscles to allow a stool to be passed), while for others constipation might be caused by a food allergy or something more grave. Whatever the cause, it is important to seek treatment! - failing to do so can risk the onset of serious complications, such as:

  • Hemorrhoids. If you have to strain constantly to pass a stool, it can really strain the veins around the anus, leading to swelling of those veins - which can cause painful hemorrhoids.
  • Anal fissure (torn skin in the anus). This can be caused by the passing of a very large stool, due to the inability to pass smaller, more frequent stools.
  • Fecal impaction. If you experience chronic constipation, it might be that fecal matter accumulates in the bowel, leading to an accumulation of hardened stool within your intestines.
  • Rectal prolapse. A prolapse can occur when repeated straining to pass a stool leads to part of the rectum stretching too much and then protruding from the anus.
